新年の１月４日、イギリスの著名なミシュラン星付きのレストラン経営者で、

ワインライターやワイン審査員もこなし、南アフリカワインの大ファンでもある

ロジャー・ジョーンズが主催する「グレート・シャルドネ・チャレンジ」が

南アフリカ・ヘメルアンアードのニュートンジョンソンで行われた。

審査員はロジャーがイギリスから連れてきた７人のチーム。

出品されたワインは、南アフリカ・ヘメルアンアード地区を代表する

シャルドネと新世界のシャルドネ、計23アイテムの比較。

そこでアタラクシア・シャルドネ2015が１位のトロフィを受賞。

現在は2016VTを販売しています。

アタラクシアのオーナー兼醸造家のケヴィンは、この結果に驚いていない。

この2015アタラクシア・シャルドネが見事1位評価だったからだ。

THE GREAT CHARDONNAY CHALLENGE:

HEMEL-EN-AARDE vs THE NEW WORLD

4^th JANUARY 2019

Roger Jones, highly respected UK restauranteur, wine writer, wine judge and Michelin-starred Chef, is a keen advocate and friend of South African wines. He hosted a taste-off on 4^th January 2019 at Newton Johnson Winery between Chardonnays of the Hemel-en-Aarde vs The New World. Accompanying him from the UK was a hand-picked judging panel of seven people, who teamed up with the participating Hemel-en-Aarde producers to judge the 23 selected wines on the day.

On the day, the Hemel-en-Aarde wines blew the challengers away. That makes me very proud. What makes me prouder is that the  Ataraxia Chardonnay 2015 walked away with the top honour! The trophy, a beautiful Riedel decanter, is on proud display in the Wine Lounge.

The Ataraxia Chardonnay 2015 is however, no stranger to the limelight, having shared the first place rating in an exhaustive review of 120-plus South African Chardonnay’s that are available in the UK an article that was published in the April 2017 issue of the DECANTER magazine.

With years 40 years in the hospitality business, Roger is a highly respected Chef, having held  Michelin Star for 12 years in a row, and owns the highly acclaimed restaurant, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn. In addition to the restaurant business, Roger is also a respected wine writer working with The-Buyer.net as well as contributing to numerous wine journals including Decanter’s monthly panel tastings as well as judging The Taittinger Sommelier of the Year Competition, Decanter World Wine Awards, Germany Top 50 and Rioja 10×10.
